Ancient Egyptian culture has done much to contribute to the modern tattoo industry. Historically and socially, Egyptian tattoo designs have emerged as a category of art and as a visual artifact of Middle Eastern history.

The ancient Egyptians relied heavily on tattooing for body ornamentation and other religious and social reasons. The mummy of Amunet, a priestess, was discovered in Thebes and dates back thousands and thousands of years. This mummy shows one of the earliest know examples of this type of tattooing.

Society's obsession with all things Egyptian continues to be driven by many forces. Museum exhibitions, mummy and tomb excavations, specials on the Discovery channel, and even Hollywood depictions of Egypt and the mystery that surrounds the land keep interest piqued in this culture. The mere images of the Pyramids and the great Sphinx elicit curiosity in people of all kinds. It is obvious why tattoos of this sort are popular as well.

The Navajo Indians, Aztecs, Egyptians, and countless other cultures have worshipped a sun god at one time or another. Most often, there was a sense that the sun could heat the body one a cold day, and thereby keep humans alive and functioning. On the other hand, it was believed that - if the sun god was so displeased - the god could try to kill its worshippers by drying up the land, killing crops and animals, not providing rains for water, and thereby killing people. 

 In Egypt, the sun god was called Ra - depicted with a hawk head in many ancient characters. Ra was said to be the creator - the one who cried as he created the Earth (because it was so beautiful when he had finished) that the tears fell to the earth, and became people. Celtics actually had an ancient sun god by the name of Lugh. The Native Americans spoke of Tsohanoai, the god who carried the sun upon his back - across the sky - everyday. At night, he hung the sun from a peg in his house. Hence, that is why the moon is not as bright as the sun. The Aztec god, who also seemed the hardest to please, was named Huitzilopochtli. He was the sun and the war god, and was continuously offered human sacrifices to secure the plentiful ness of rain, as well as victory in wartimes. 

The sun still gets its shining moment in today's tattoos (sorry about the pun). As cool as a sun tattoo had been in the past, it seems to have fallen by the wayside - replaced by other celestial bodies like the stars or moon. It still holds its place in background scenery upon tattoos though. Tattoos depicting an eagle flying through the blue sky, as the sun glints off its widespread wings, or a wolf perches on a rock face as the sun slowly seeps up behind a dark mountain the background, still utilize the sun as a shadowing assistant. 

When working at my family business as a teenager, it seemed that one of my stepfathers' best customers always came in bearing a new tattoo. His most significant tattoo on his body took up just about his entire back. It was a Native American Chief in full headdress, with his hands and face upturned to the sky, as if in prayers of thanks. On his left side, an eagle flew in the sky. The shadow of the eagle seemed to fall into the chief. 

On the opposite side, a shadow exited the chief - shaping itself into that of a bear. So, to say that a sun tattoo is just that - a sun - really hides the true nature of shadowing. As anyone who has ever gotten a tattoo can attest, shadowing is one of the most critical pieces in a tattoo. You know being a Christian, I can not help but notice the number of Christian Tattoos I am noticing on some of the folks at my church. I can not say that I dislike them, on the contrary I find them very striking. Different crosses, words in Latin, bibles, and many other images. I spoke to a young man about why he would want to place Christian Tattoos on his body, and he told me "He wanted to let everyone know that he has devoted his life to God"!

I made a big mistake and let my Mom know that I was considering getting a Christian Cross tattoo, and she was very quick to remind me that the book of Leviticus clearly states that "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord." Some say that the passage is referring to practices of pagans of the time, in which they would carve idols on their bodies at funerals. The new Testament does not mention these restrictions. 

So a lot of young Christian's have decided to celebrate their union with God, and let everyone know that they have given there life to him and they want to display it through Christian Tattoos such as Praying Hands, Chalices, The Sacred Heart, Angels, Mary, The Apostles and even Jesus himself! These symbols could include doves, angels fighting demons in battle scenes, Biblical references, crucifixion scenes, and many more. 

In a day where you look around and Religion is being taken away at alarming rates, I think it very noble that an individual would take a stance and tell the world, Look at me! I have given myself to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! There are way to many things that are worse then getting Christian Tattoos!

o A Harris Poll done in 2003 revealed that 16% of Americans had at least one tattoo. That's roughly 40 million people. That's up from 6% back in 1936 when only 10 million Americans had tattoos.

o A survey done by Esquire magazine in 2002 stated that 1 in 8 Americans has a tattoo.

o According to a study in 2005 from The American Society of Dermatological Surgery, out of the people that they treated for laser and light therapy, only 6% were getting tattoos removed.

o US News & World Report says there are more than 20,000 tattoo parlors operating in the United States and on the average; a new parlor is opening every day.

One segment of body art that is gaining popularity is the "always visible" tattoo. These include tattoos on the neck and face that can't always be covered up by clothing. Most neck tattoos are placed on the side of the neck or the back of the neck which is known as the nape. An owner of a tattoo parlor in New York says 20 - 30 percent of the tattoos he does are on the hand, face, or neck.

A question often asked when deciding on getting a neck tattoo is will it be more painful than getting a tat on other parts of the body?
